Slovakia's second joint local election day

Slovakia holds municipal and regional (VÚC) elections together on Saturday 24 October 2026 — only the second time the two have been combined, after the first joint vote in October 2022 replaced what had been separate election cycles. Voters receive two ballot sets in different colours, white for the municipal vote and blue for the regional one, choosing mayors and municipal councils in every town and village alongside the governors (predseda) and councils of Slovakia's eight self-governing regions (kraje), all for four-year terms.

How it works

Mayors and regional governors are elected by first-past-the-post in a single round — the candidate with the most votes wins outright, with no runoff. Municipal and regional councils are elected from multi-member wards. The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic (Štatistický úrad SR) processes and publishes results electronically for both the municipal and the regional election, through separate portals, with the State Election Commission confirming the final count.

The last joint vote (2022)

Turnout was 46.19% in the municipal election and 43.74% in the regional one — the regional figure well up on the 29.75% recorded at the previous, separately held 2017 regional election. In Bratislava, mayor Matúš Vallo was re-elected with 60.20% against Rudolf Kusý's 27.73% in a field of eight candidates, on a city turnout of 36.88%. In Košice, mayor Jaroslav Polaček was re-elected with 36.79% against Milan Lesňák's 21.22%. Regionally, six of the eight governors held their seats, including Bratislava's Juraj Droba (63.35%), Trenčín's Jaroslav Baška (67.3%) and Trnava's Jozef Viskupič (37.8%); the only two changes came in Nitra, where Branislav Becík (27.49%) unseated incumbent Milan Belica (21.85%), and in Banská Bystrica, where Ondrej Lunter (47.53%) succeeded his father, the outgoing governor Ján Lunter.

The 2026 field

Matúš Vallo is seeking a third term as Bratislava mayor, backed by his own Team Bratislava together with Progressive Slovakia, SaS and Demokrati, against a field of six candidates. Juraj Droba is likewise seeking re-election as governor of the Bratislava region. Nationally, the vote is the first broad electoral test since Robert Fico's SMER-led coalition, governing with Hlas and the Slovak National Party since the September 2023 parliamentary election, took office; Fico has publicly played down its significance for national politics and predicted a strong showing for independent candidates, who have long dominated Slovak local government regardless of which coalition holds power in Bratislava.
