About elections in Portugal
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Portugal is a semi-presidential republic in southwestern Europe, a NATO founding member, and European Union member since 1986. The 230-seat unicameral Assembly of the Republic (Assembleia da Republica) is elected by proportional representation from 22 constituencies (20 continental districts plus Azores and Madeira). The president is directly elected for five-year terms (two-term maximum) and holds significant constitutional reserve powers: appointing the prime minister, vetoing legislation, dissolving parliament, and declaring states of emergency. Executive power is shared between the president and prime minister. Portugal transitioned to democracy in the April 1974 Carnation Revolution, ending 41 years of the Estado Novo authoritarian regime. The political system has been dominated by two parties: the Socialist Party (PS, centre-left) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD, centre-right / EPP). The rise of Chega ("Enough"), a right-wing populist party led by Andre Ventura, disrupted this bipartism: Chega won 50 parliamentary seats in the March 2024 elections. In the 2026 presidential election, PS-backed Antonio Jose Seguro defeated Ventura in the second round with 66.8%, while an AD minority government (PSD-CDS-PPM) continued under Luis Montenegro. Portugal has achieved strong economic recovery since its 2011-2014 EU/IMF bailout, driven by tourism, exports, and technology. The National Elections Commission (CNE, cne.pt) oversees elections.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Portugal — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
