Turnout: 48.31%

Overview

Italy held European Parliament elections on 8-9 June 2024, electing 76 Italian MEPs (out of 720 total EU members). Brothers of Italy (FdI) of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni won 28.76% and 24 seats — its best ever EP result and the highest of any Italian party, confirming Meloni's ascendancy in Italian politics. The Democratic Party (PD) came second with 24.11% and 21 seats, performing significantly better than in the 2022 general election. The Five Star Movement (M5S) won 9.98% and 8 seats; Forza Italia-We Moderates won 9.59% and 8 seats; Lega won 8.97% and 8 seats. Turnout was 48.31%, roughly in line with Italy's recent EP election participation and above the EU average of 51.1%. The European elections confirmed the rightward shift in Italian politics begun in 2022, with the right-wing coalition parties (FdI + FI + Lega) collectively winning 47.32%.

Electoral system

Italy uses proportional representation with preferential voting for European Parliament elections. Voters choose a party list and may cast up to three preference votes for individual candidates on that list. Italy is divided into five large constituencies (North-West, North-East, Centre, South, and Islands) for EP elections, though Italy uses a single national threshold of 4%. Seats within each Italian party allocation are then distributed across the five constituencies. Italian MEPs serve five-year terms and sit in EU political groups (FdI in ECR, PD in S&D, FI in EPP, M5S in non-attached, Lega in ID/Patriots).

Previous election

In the May 2019 European elections, Lega won 34.26% (28 seats) under Matteo Salvini, making it the largest Italian party in the EP. M5S won 17.06% (14 seats), PD won 22.74% (19 seats), and FI won 8.79% (7 seats). Meloni's FdI won 6.44% (5 seats) at that time. The result reflected the high point of the first Conte government's Lega-M5S coalition, before Salvini's withdrawal from the government later that summer.
