About elections in Italy
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Italy is a parliamentary republic and founding European Union member. The bicameral Parliament consists of the 400-seat Chamber of Deputies and the 200-seat Senate, both elected simultaneously by a mixed system: two-thirds of seats by proportional representation with a 3% threshold, one-third by first-past-the-post from single-member constituencies. The prime minister leads the executive and commands a parliamentary majority; the president is a largely ceremonial figure elected by Parliament. Italian politics has been highly volatile since the early 1990s when the "Tangentopoli" corruption scandals swept away the old party system. Governing coalitions are complex and frequently collapse. The centre-right coalition of Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy (FdI), Lega (Matteo Salvini), and Forza Italia won the September 2022 elections, making Meloni Italy's first female prime minister. FdI's post-fascist roots have made her government controversial internationally, though it has maintained Italy's EU and NATO commitments. Italy uses the referendum extensively: abrogative referendums can repeal laws with 500,000 signatures and 50% turnout quorum; constitutional referendums on amendments are held without a turnout quorum. Italy's economic challenges include high public debt, low productivity growth, youth unemployment, and regional disparities between the north and south (Mezzogiorno). The Ministry of the Interior (interno.gov.it) administers elections; the Constitutional Court adjudicates electoral disputes.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Italy — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
