Manitoba holds its general municipal elections on Wednesday 28 October 2026. Voters across the province elect mayors, reeves, councillors and school board trustees for four-year terms. Manitoba's municipal elections are non-partisan: there are no municipal parties on the ballot, and candidates stand as individuals.

The province's local government is split between cities and towns, which elect mayors, and rural municipalities, which elect reeves — the older title for the head of a rural council, still in everyday use in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Both sit alongside councillors elected either by ward or at large.

Winnipeg

Winnipeg contains well over half of Manitoba's population, and its mayoral race is the one contest in the province with a genuinely provincial profile. Scott Gillingham won the mayoralty in 2022; the 2026 field includes Noah Redden, Zachary Uminski, Michael Vogiatzakis and Don Woodstock among others. The city elects its mayor at large and its councillors by ward.

Winnipeg's council decides on transit, policing, snow clearing and the property tax rate, and has spent much of the current term on infrastructure renewal and on the city's response to homelessness — the issues that tend to decide Winnipeg municipal elections, along with the perennial question of the road-repair budget.

Beyond the city

Brandon, Manitoba's second city, elects its own mayor and council, as do Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, Dauphin, Morden, Winkler, Thompson and Flin Flon. Alongside them dozens of rural municipalities — Brokenhead, Hanover, Macdonald, Rockwood, Ritchot, Gimli, La Broquerie, Rhineland, East St. Paul, Rosser and the rest — elect reeves and councillors. In several of them the reeve is returned unopposed, which is normal in rural Manitoba and is reported as an acclamation rather than as a vote.

The rules

Voting is first-past-the-post throughout. Mayors and reeves are elected in a single province-wide-style plurality contest within their own municipality; councillors are elected either one per ward by plurality, or at large by block voting where each voter marks as many names as there are seats. Each municipality runs its own election under Manitoba's Municipal Councils and School Boards Elections Act, with its own senior election official, so results are published municipality by municipality.
