The political system of Zambia
Zambia is a presidential republic in Southern Africa and one of the region's more competitive multi-party democracies. The president is directly elected for a five-year term and, under the 2016 constitutional amendments, must win more than 50% of the vote, with a run-off between the top two if no candidate clears that bar; each presidential candidate runs on a joint ticket with a running mate who becomes Vice-President. The National Assembly was substantially reshaped by a constitutional amendment passed in December 2025 (Bill 7): from the 2026 election it has 226 members elected by first-past-the-post in single-member constituencies — up from 156, after a delimitation exercise that created 70 new seats — plus 40 members chosen by proportional representation from party lists and reserved for women, youth and persons with disabilities, and up to 11 presidential nominees, alongside the Vice-President, the Speaker and two deputy speakers. Zambia has seen several peaceful transfers of power since the return of multi-party politics in 1991. In the August 2021 general election Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND) decisively defeated the incumbent Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front (PF), the third time the ruling party had changed at the ballot box. Zambia's economy depends heavily on copper mining; the country defaulted on its external debt in 2020 and has since pursued an IMF-backed restructuring. Key challenges include debt sustainability, youth unemployment, and drought that has cut hydropower output. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ, elections.org.zm) administers the general elections, which simultaneously fill the presidency, the National Assembly and local council seats; the presidential and parliamentary contests are held on the same day but decided by different electoral systems, and each has its own page here.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Zambia — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
