Federal elections are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years. Every four years voters choose the president and vice-president — not directly, but through the Electoral College, in which each state casts electoral votes equal to its combined House and Senate seats (538 in total, with 270 needed to win); all states except Maine and Nebraska award their electors winner-take-all to the statewide victor. Simultaneously, all 435 seats of the House of Representatives are contested every two years, elected by first-past-the-post in single-member districts apportioned to states by population and redrawn after each decennial census. The Senate has 100 members — two per state regardless of size — serving staggered six-year terms, so roughly one-third of the chamber (a "class") is up at each election; the vice-president breaks Senate ties.
