About elections in Uganda
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Uganda is a presidential republic in East Africa, governed since 1986 by President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM). Museveni came to power after leading the NRA guerrilla movement from 1981 to 1986. Constitutional amendments in 2005 removed presidential term limits, and a 2017 amendment removed the age cap of 75, enabling Museveni's continuation indefinitely. The 529-seat Parliament consists of 290 directly elected constituency MPs, plus reserved seats for women (one per district, approximately 146 seats), youth, workers, people with disabilities, and the army. Presidential elections use a simple plurality nationwide. Opposition politician Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi), a pop musician, has been the main challenger in both 2021 and 2026 elections, winning approximately 25-35% of the vote in contests that international observers consistently documented as flawed. Uganda faces significant challenges: high youth unemployment (over 60% of the population is under 25), dependence on coffee and other agricultural exports, governance weaknesses, and healthcare system strain. The country has made significant strides in HIV/AIDS treatment and in the peace process with the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Uganda also hosts the largest refugee population in Africa, primarily from South Sudan and DR Congo. The Electoral Commission of Uganda (ec.or.ug) administers elections. Uganda became an oil producer with the development of Lake Albert fields beginning in the mid-2020s.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Uganda — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
