The political system of Serbia
Serbia is a parliamentary republic in the Western Balkans and a candidate for European Union membership since 2012. Legislative power rests with the 250-seat unicameral National Assembly (Narodna skupstina), elected for four years by closed-list proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with seats allocated by the d'Hondt method among lists clearing a 3% threshold; lists representing national minorities are admitted on a lower, naturally calculated quota. The government is formed by whoever commands a majority in the chamber and is led by the prime minister. The president is directly elected for a five-year term and is formally a largely ceremonial head of state, though in practice Aleksandar Vucic — prime minister from 2014 and president since 2017 — has been the dominant political figure throughout, first through the premiership and then from the presidency. The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has led every government since 2012, usually in coalition with the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS). Serbia has repeatedly held early elections rather than running parliaments to term: the votes of 2014, 2016, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2026 were all snap elections. International monitors and domestic observers have documented recurring problems with electoral conditions, including media imbalance, pressure on public-sector voters and irregularities on polling day, and the V-Dem Institute has classified Serbia as an electoral autocracy since 2014. Since November 2024 the country has seen sustained student-led anti-corruption protests following the collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy, which killed sixteen people. Elections are administered by the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK), which publishes preliminary results on election night and the confirmed seat allocation in the days that follow.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Serbia — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
