About elections in São Tomé and Príncipe
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Sao Tome and Principe is a semi-presidential republic made up of two main islands in the Gulf of Guinea off Central Africa, and one of Africa's smallest nations with about 230,000 people. It has been a stable multi-party democracy since 1990, with regular peaceful alternations of power. The 55-seat National Assembly is elected by proportional representation for four-year terms; the president is directly elected by a two-round majority system and shares executive power with a prime minister drawn from the parliamentary majority. The two dominant parties are the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) and the Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Principe (MLSTP/PSD), the former independence movement. The country's economy is small and aid-dependent, built on cocoa exports, fishing and a growing tourism sector, with long-anticipated offshore oil yet to be developed. Sao Tome and Principe is a member of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and is generally regarded as one of Africa's better-governed and freest states. Elections are administered by the National Elections Commission (CEN).
