About elections in Peru

Peru is a presidential republic of approximately 33 million people on South America's Pacific coast. After a long period of authoritarian governance under Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), Peru transitioned to competitive democracy, but has experienced chronic political instability since 2016. The bicameral Congress was reconstituted in 2026 with a 130-seat Chamber of Deputies and a 60-seat Senate, restoring the upper house abolished under Fujimori's 1993 constitution. The president is directly elected for five-year terms; re-election is prohibited for consecutive terms. Peru has had six presidents in ten years due to congressional impeachments, forced resignations, and constitutional crises. Key political forces include Fuerza Popular (FP) of Keiko Fujimori (right), the left-wing Juntos por el Peru (JP), and various centrist formations. No single party has dominated; governments are typically minority administrations requiring constant coalition management. The April 2026 elections resulted in FP winning the most congressional seats while the presidential race went to a second round. Peru's economy is one of South America's strongest performers, driven by copper, gold, zinc, silver exports, and agriculture. The country faces persistent challenges including corruption (the Odebrecht network implicated multiple presidents), inequality, poverty in the Andes and Amazonia, and environmental conflicts over mining. The ONPE (National Office of Electoral Processes, onpe.gob.pe) administers elections; the JNE (National Elections Jury) resolves disputes.

I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
