The political system of Palestine
Palestine is governed by the Palestinian National Authority, established under the Oslo Accords in 1994 and recognised as a non-member observer state by the United Nations General Assembly since 2012. Its legislature is the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), elected for four years; under amendments approved in 2026 the chamber grows from 132 to 200 seats and is filled by closed-list proportional representation in a single national constituency, with a 1% threshold and six seats reserved for Christian candidates. The president is directly elected for a four-year term and appoints the prime minister. In practice the electoral cycle broke down long ago: the last legislative election was held on 25 January 2006 and the last presidential election in January 2005. Hamas won the 2006 vote, a national unity government collapsed in 2007, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip that June, and Palestinian governance has been divided between Ramallah and Gaza ever since. President Mahmoud Abbas has remained in office beyond the expiry of his term in January 2009, legislating by decree after the Legislative Council was dissolved in 2018. Elections called for 22 May 2021 were cancelled four weeks beforehand over the absence of Israeli guarantees for voting in East Jerusalem. Elections are administered by the Central Elections Commission (CEC), an independent body based in Ramallah, which maintains the voter roll across the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Palestine — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
