About elections in Nepal
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Nepal is a federal democratic republic that ended its 240-year Shah monarchy in 2008 following a decade-long Maoist insurgency (1996-2006) and a popular movement. The 275-seat House of Representatives (Pratinidhi Sabha) is elected by a parallel mixed-member system: 165 seats from single-member FPTP constituencies and 110 seats by proportional representation with a 3% threshold. A National Assembly (upper house) of 59 seats is elected by provincial assemblies and local governments. Nepal has 7 provinces with their own assemblies. The prime minister leads the government; the president is a largely ceremonial head of state. Nepal experienced extreme political instability from 2008 to 2026, with over 13 governments in roughly 16 years due to fragmented coalition politics. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) of Rabi Lamichhane won a historic landslide in the March 2026 elections following "Gen Z" protests in 2025 against the corrupt political establishment. Key political forces historically include the Nepali Congress (NC, social-democratic), the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), and the Maoist Centre (formerly CPN-M). Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries, with an economy dependent on remittances from migrant workers in the Gulf and India, as well as tourism to the Himalayas. The Election Commission of Nepal (election.gov.np) administers elections.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Nepal — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
