About elections in Malta
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. This is the Malta hub on ElectioMap — it brings together the Malta election I cover, with the official result, vote and turnout shares to two decimal places, and, where the electoral authority publishes an official regional breakdown, an interactive map you can explore region by region.
Malta is a parliamentary republic and the European Union's smallest member state by both area and population (approximately 540,000 people). The 65-seat unicameral Parliament (Kamra tad-Deputati) is elected by single transferable vote (STV) from 13 five-seat constituencies. A proportionality correction mechanism can add seats if the party winning more first-preference votes nationwide does not have a parliamentary majority. The prime minister leads the executive; the president is a largely ceremonial figure. Malta operates a dominant two-party system: the Labour Party (PL, social-democratic) and the Nationalist Party (PN, Christian-democratic / EPP). Labour has governed since 2013, winning elections in 2017, 2022, and 2026 under Robert Abela (who succeeded long-serving PM Joseph Muscat after the Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination scandal). The PN — led into the 2026 election by Alex Borg, who succeeded Bernard Grech as leader — has been in opposition across multiple consecutive elections. Malta is the only EU member state that has not signed the Istanbul Convention and has maintained a constitutional ban on abortion (with limited exceptions). The Maltese economy has grown rapidly since EU accession, driven by gaming, financial services, tourism, and construction. Malta faces challenges including migration pressure given its central Mediterranean location, governance transparency, and environmental sustainability. The Electoral Commission of Malta administers elections.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Malta — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
