About elections in Maldives
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. The Maldives is a presidential republic and archipelago nation of approximately 187 inhabited islands spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean. The 87-seat unicameral People's Majlis is elected by first-past-the-post from single-member constituencies. The president is directly elected for five-year terms and holds broad executive authority. The Maldives transitioned to multi-party democracy with a new constitution in 2008, following 30 years of authoritarian rule under President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Since democratisation, power has alternated between the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and coalitions aligned with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). The People's National Congress (PNC) of President Mohamed Muizzu won the 2023 presidential election and a parliamentary majority in 2024, ending a period of MDP governance under Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The Maldives faces existential climate change risks: most of the country is less than 1 metre above sea level, making it one of the world's most vulnerable nations to sea-level rise. The government has pursued an ambitious climate agenda internationally while managing complex geopolitical relationships with India and China. The Maldives is an important Indian Ocean tourist destination and relies heavily on tourism revenue. The Elections Commission of the Maldives (elections.gov.mv) administers elections including presidential, parliamentary, and local government polls, as well as referendums.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Maldives — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
