About elections in Laos
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Laos is a single-party socialist republic governed by the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) since the communist Pathet Lao took power in 1975, following the end of the Vietnam War-era conflicts in Indochina. The 175-seat unicameral National Assembly is elected every five years; all candidates must be approved by the Lao Front for National Development (LFND), the LPRP's mass organisation. In practice, all elected members are LPRP members or LPRP-approved independents. The president and prime minister are elected by the National Assembly on the LPRP's recommendations. There is no meaningful political competition; independent media, civil society, and organised dissent are prohibited. Laos is one of Southeast Asia's least economically developed nations, with an economy based on hydropower exports to Thailand and China, mining, forestry, and limited agriculture. The country has become heavily indebted to China through large infrastructure projects (especially a high-speed railway), contributing to a currency crisis in 2022-2023. Laos is also a significant transit country for opium production and drug trafficking from the Golden Triangle. The country maintains close relations with Vietnam and China. Freedom of the press, religion (for non-Buddhist minorities), and speech are severely restricted. The Lao Front for National Development oversees elections; results are announced via state media (KPL, kpl.gov.la). International observation is not permitted.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Laos — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
