About elections in India
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. This is the India hub on ElectioMap — it brings together the 2 India elections I cover, each with the official results, vote and turnout shares to two decimal places, and, where the electoral authority publishes an official regional breakdown, an interactive map you can explore region by region.
India is a federal parliamentary republic and, with an electorate approaching a billion people, by far the largest democracy in the world. Executive power rests with a Council of Ministers led by the prime minister, who must command the confidence of the lower house of Parliament; the president, chosen by an electoral college of national and state legislators, is a largely ceremonial head of state. Parliament is bicameral: the directly elected Lok Sabha (House of the People) and the indirectly elected Rajya Sabha (Council of States), whose members are chosen by the state legislatures to represent India's states and union territories. The Lok Sabha has 543 elected seats filled by first-past-the-post in single-member constituencies for five-year terms, with a bloc of seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes; a majority requires 272. Because the government is formed in the Lok Sabha, its election is the decisive national contest, and it is the one this hub covers. Indian politics has long been organised around two national poles and a crowded field of powerful regional parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu-nationalist party of the right led by Narendra Modi — prime minister since 2014 — heads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA); the Indian National Congress (INC), the centre-left party of the independence movement and of the Nehru–Gandhi tradition that governed for most of the post-1947 era, anchors the opposition INDIA bloc. Around them, state-based parties such as the DMK in Tamil Nadu, the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi and Punjab, and many others hold decisive weight, so national majorities are typically built through broad multi-party alliances. In 2019 the BJP won a commanding majority of 303 seats; in 2024 it remained the largest party but fell short of a majority on its own, governing on the strength of its NDA partners for the first time since Modi took office. Elections are administered by the Election Commission of India, an independent constitutional authority, and are conducted with electronic voting machines over several weeks in multiple phases — a logistical undertaking without parallel anywhere in the world. Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for India — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
