About elections in Hungary
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. This is the Hungary hub on ElectioMap — it brings together the 5 Hungary elections I cover, each with the official results, vote and turnout shares to two decimal places, and an interactive map you can explore region by region.
Hungary is a parliamentary republic and European Union member since 2004. The 199-seat unicameral National Assembly (Orszaggyules) is elected by a mixed system: 106 seats from single-member constituencies (FPTP) and 93 seats from a national list (proportional, d'Hondt, 5% threshold). The prime minister holds executive authority; the president is a largely ceremonial figure elected by Parliament. Viktor Orban's Fidesz party has governed continuously since winning a supermajority in 2010, retaining supermajorities in 2014 and 2018 before winning a fourth consecutive term in 2022, also with a two-thirds majority. The opposition united against Fidesz in 2022 but suffered a decisive defeat under the leadership of Peter Marki-Zay. In the 2026 elections, however, Peter Magyar's Tisza (Respect and Freedom) party broke Fidesz's run, winning 141 seats — a two-thirds supermajority — to Fidesz-KDNP's 52, with the far-right Our Homeland Movement taking the remaining 6. This was Hungary's first government change since 2010, ending one of Central Europe's longest ruling-party streaks. Hungary's political system under Fidesz had featured extensive gerrymandering, media dominance, and constitutional changes that critics argued dismantled checks and balances. Hungary's new government faces the challenge of aligning with EU rule-of-law requirements while navigating deeply polarised domestic politics. The National Election Commission (valasztas.hu) administers Hungarian elections.
Each election listed here has its own page with the full breakdown by party or candidate and an interactive map of the result.
Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Hungary — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled. When ElectioMap covers an election live, the page updates automatically as official figures are released. For the full sourcing and update policy, see Data & Methodology and the Editorial Policy.
