Government and coalitions
In office now
Dickon Mitchell (NDC) has been prime minister since the June 2022 election, in which the NDC won 9 of the 15 seats and the NNP 6. Emmalin Pierre leads the NNP and the opposition, having succeeded Keith Mitchell as party leader in 2024. Peter David, elected for the NNP in 2022, left it in 2025 and founded the DPM. Parliament was dissolved on 2 October 2026.
Possible coalitions
No pre-election alliances have been announced: the NDC and the NNP each field candidates in all 15 constituencies and the DPM in nine. Eight seats are needed for a majority, so with single-member seats one party normally governs alone; a hung House would need a deal that nobody has yet put on the table.
About this election
The election in brief
Grenada votes on Thursday 5 November 2026 to elect all 15 members of its House of Representatives. Parliament was dissolved and the writ for the election issued on 2 October 2026 on the advice of Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, who announced the polling date at a rally of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) in St Mark on 4 October. Candidates were nominated on 15 October and police officers vote early on 2 November. The election decides whether the NDC, which won power in 2022, can hold it — something the party has never managed — or whether the New National Party (NNP) returns under a new leader.
How the vote works
Grenada, a three-island state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, is a parliamentary democracy with King Charles III as head of state, represented by a Governor-General. Each of the 15 constituencies elects one member by first-past-the-post: the candidate with the most votes wins, with no run-off. A party needs eight seats for a majority, and the leader who commands it becomes prime minister. The upper house, the Senate, is appointed rather than elected. Under the Elections Act, polling runs from six in the morning to five in the afternoon.
The 2022 result
At the previous election, in June 2022, the NDC — led by Dickon Mitchell, an attorney who had entered frontline politics the year before — won nine of the 15 seats and ended the NNP's time in government; the NNP, then still led by its founder and long-serving prime minister Keith Mitchell, took the other six. Since its formation in 1987 the NDC has won three general elections, in 1990, 2008 and 2022, but never two in a row. The NNP, by contrast, is the only party in Grenada's history to have won every seat, which it has done three times.
The parties
The NDC is fielding candidates in all 15 constituencies, with Dickon Mitchell defending his own seat of St David and asking voters for a second term. The NNP also contests all 15. It is led by Emmalin Pierre, a former teacher and government minister who succeeded Keith Mitchell in 2024 and is the first woman to lead the party into a general election; if the NNP wins and she holds her seat, she would become Grenada's first female prime minister. Keith Mitchell — no relation to the prime minister — has bowed out of active politics after 42 years as the member for St George North West, so this is the first election in decades without him on the NNP's ballot.
A third force is the Democratic People's Movement (DPM), launched in November 2025 by Peter David, a former foreign affairs minister who has represented the Town of St George in four general elections since 2003 — twice for the NDC, then twice for the NNP, which he left in 2025. The DPM has nominated candidates in nine constituencies. Its test is whether it can win seats beyond its leader's own.
Seats to watch
With a nine-to-six House, a swing of two seats changes the government. St Andrew South East is a rematch: Pierre has held it since 2013 and beat the NDC's David Andrew, now education minister, by 233 votes in 2022. In the Town of St George, Peter David defends the seat he won for the NNP under his new party's banner. In St David the prime minister himself is on the ballot. No credible, published opinion polling with a stated method has appeared for this election, so this page makes no forecast.
