Turnout: 40.38%
About this election
Finland's European Parliament election of 9 June 2024 was won comfortably by the National Coalition Party with 24.80% and 4 of Finland's 15 seats. The Left Alliance was the surprise of the night, surging to 17.32% and 3 seats on the strength of its lead candidate Li Andersson, who recorded the highest personal vote in the country. The Social Democrats, Centre Party and Green League each took 2 seats, and the Finns Party and Swedish People's Party one each. Turnout was 40.38%.
Finland elects its MEPs by open-list proportional representation (d'Hondt) in a single national constituency. Voters cast a personal vote for a candidate; seats are allocated to parties in proportion to their combined candidate votes. Finland held 15 seats in the 2024–2029 European Parliament.
The election took place a year into Petteri Orpo's right-wing national government, and the strong Left Alliance result was widely read as a mid-term protest against austerity and labour-market reforms. The governing Finns Party fell back sharply compared with national elections, continuing the party's historic underperformance in European contests.
In 2019 the National Coalition Party had also led, with the Greens performing strongly; in 2024 it was the Left Alliance that made the most striking gains.
