About elections in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a federal parliamentary republic and Africa's second most populous nation, with approximately 125 million people across 12 regional states and two city administrations. The 547-seat House of Peoples' Representatives is elected by first-past-the-post from single-member constituencies; a Senate-like House of the Federation handles constitutional issues between regions. The prime minister leads the executive. Ethiopia has undergone significant political change under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who came to power in 2018 on a reformist platform. He merged regional ruling parties into the Prosperity Party (PP), won the Nobel Peace Prize for making peace with Eritrea, but subsequently presided over a devastating civil war in Tigray (2020-2022) and continuing armed conflicts in Amhara and Oromia regions. Key political forces include the PP, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF, which dominated the previous ruling coalition EPRDF from 1991 to 2018), and various regional and ethnic parties. Ethiopia's federal structure follows ethnic-linguistic lines, with states for the Oromo, Amhara, Tigray, Somali, and other peoples. The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE, nebe.org.et) administers elections; elections in conflict-affected areas are frequently postponed or disrupted. Ethiopia faces challenges including ethnic federalism tensions, humanitarian crises, drought, food insecurity, and foreign debt.
