Turnout: 65.00%

Overview

The 2025 Danish regional elections, held on 18 November 2025 alongside the municipal elections, were the first conducted under a reformed regional map. The Capital Region and the Region of Zealand were merged into a single new Region of Eastern Denmark (Region Østdanmark), reducing the number of regions from five to four. The Social Democrats remained the largest party nationally but lost ground in a difficult night for the governing parties.

The electoral system

From 2025 Denmark's regional councils are elected in four regions — Eastern Denmark, Southern Denmark, Central Jutland and North Jutland — by proportional representation for four-year terms. The regions continue to run the public health service. Because this map uses the pre-2025 five-region geography, the merged Region of Eastern Denmark is shown identically on both the former Capital and Zealand areas.

The campaign and result

The campaign was again dominated by the state of the health service — waiting lists, psychiatry and the planned reorganisation of hospital care — and by the creation of the large new eastern region. Nationally the Social Democrats won about 22% of the regional vote, down sharply, ahead of Venstre on around 17% and the Conservatives and Socialist People's Party. The result mirrored the simultaneous municipal elections, where the Social Democrats fell to their weakest level in over a century.

Turnout and regional patterns

Turnout was around 65%. The Social Democrats remained the largest party in most of the country, but the centre-right and the green left both advanced. The map above shows the largest party in each regional council; the full breakdown is available on click.

Aftermath

The 2025 elections inaugurated the new four-region structure and a fresh slate of regional chairs, with the centre-right consolidating its local recovery. The reform was intended to streamline the administration of the health service, the regions' core task, and the new Region of Eastern Denmark became by far the largest, covering the capital and the whole of Zealand.
