About elections in Costa Rica
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Costa Rica is a presidential republic and one of Latin America's most stable and longest-established democracies, having abolished its military in 1948 — a decision enshrined in the constitution. The 57-seat unicameral Legislative Assembly is elected by proportional representation from 7 provinces. The president is directly elected for a four-year term; consecutive re-election is prohibited. Costa Rica's political landscape has diversified significantly since the traditional two-party system (PLN vs. PUSC) fragmented in the 2010s. Rodrigo Chaves Robles of the Social Democratic Progress Party (PPSD), a populist former World Bank economist, won the April 2022 presidential election in a second round with 52.8%. His PPSD holds only 10 of 57 Legislative Assembly seats, requiring complex coalition management. Other significant forces include the National Liberation Party (PLN, social-democratic, founded 1951), the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC), the New Republic party, and Frente Amplio (left). Costa Rica is renowned for its environmental policies, high human development index, and universal healthcare system. The country faces significant challenges including corruption, inequality, debt, and pressure on public services. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE, tse.go.cr) is the independent constitutional body administering elections; it is widely regarded as one of Latin America's most credible electoral authorities. Elections are compulsory by law, though enforcement is minimal.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Costa Rica — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
