About elections in Republic of the Congo

The Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) is a presidential republic in Central Africa, distinct from the much larger Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) across the Congo River. President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled the country almost continuously since 1979 — one of Africa's longest tenures. He governed from 1979 to 1992 under a Marxist-Leninist one-party system, briefly ceded power after multi-party elections in 1992, then returned to power in 1997 following a civil war. The 2015 constitutional referendum removed presidential term limits, enabling Sassou Nguesso's continued candidacy. Presidential elections since 2016 have been contested only by marginal candidates, with credible opposition either boycotting or absent from the ballot. The 139-seat unicameral National Assembly is elected by majority runoff from single-member constituencies; a Senate of 72 members is partially elected by local councils. The Congolese Party of Labour (PCT) and its allied coalition dominate the legislature. Congo is a significant oil producer, with petroleum revenues constituting the majority of government income, though the population remains largely poor due to weak institutions and corruption. Key challenges include debt management, infrastructure, deforestation, and authoritarian governance. International election observers have consistently noted serious concerns about the integrity of elections. The Ministry of the Interior announces results.

I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
