About elections in Bulgaria
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic and European Union member state since 2007. The 240-seat unicameral National Assembly (Narodno Sabranie) is elected by proportional representation from 31 multi-member constituencies, with a 4% electoral threshold. The prime minister leads the government and is appointed by the largest parliamentary grouping; the president is directly elected separately as a largely ceremonial head of state. Bulgaria experienced a prolonged period of political instability from 2021 to 2023, holding six parliamentary elections in three years as no stable coalition could be formed. Anti-corruption protests from 2020-2021 destabilised the GERB party of long-serving PM Boyko Borisov, leading to fragmented parliaments. By 2024-2025, a broader coalition stabilised governance, with GERB remaining the largest party. Bulgaria is a NATO member and aspires to join the Eurozone and the Schengen Area. Key political formations include GERB (centre-right), BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party, left), Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF, liberal, representing ethnic Turks and Muslims), and anti-establishment parties such as There Is Such a People (ITN) and We Continue the Change (PP). Bulgaria faces challenges including corruption, demographic decline, judicial independence, and energy transition. The Central Election Commission (cik.bg) administers elections.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Bulgaria — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
