About elections in Barbados

Barbados is a parliamentary republic within the Commonwealth, having removed the British monarch as head of state and become a republic in November 2021 — the world's newest republic at the time. The 30-seat House of Assembly is elected by first-past-the-post from 30 single-member constituencies; a Senate of 21 appointed members completes the bicameral Parliament. Prime Minister Mia Mottley has led the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to three consecutive general election sweeps: in 2018 (30-0), 2022 (30-0), and 2026 (30-0), a feat without modern Caribbean precedent. The main opposition, the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), has been shut out of Parliament across all three contests despite winning 27% of votes in 2026. The first-past-the-post system has dramatically exaggerated the BLP's dominance. The Barbadian economy relies on tourism, offshore financial services, and sugar production. Under Mottley, Barbados has pursued ambitious climate finance initiatives and positioned itself as a leader in Caribbean climate policy, hosting international forums on climate debt and reparations. The Electoral and Boundaries Commission administers Barbadian elections. Voter turnout has declined across successive elections, falling to a record low of 37.3% in 2026, reflecting voter fatigue given the absence of meaningful parliamentary competition.

I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
