About elections in Bangladesh
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Bangladesh is a parliamentary republic of approximately 170 million people, making it one of the world's most populous nations. The 350-seat Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) consists of 300 directly elected members from single-member constituencies and 50 seats reserved for women, allocated proportionally. The prime minister holds executive authority; the president is a largely ceremonial head of state elected by Parliament. Bangladesh's post-independence politics (independent from Pakistan in 1971) has been shaped by intense rivalry between the Awami League (AL) of the Mujib family and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) founded by President Ziaur Rahman. This rivalry produced periods of military rule, a two-decade period of competitive democracy from 1991 to 2006, contested elections in 2014 and 2018, and ultimately the August 2024 uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina's government. Under a caretaker administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh held competitive elections in February 2026, with the BNP winning a commanding majority. Jamaat-e-Islami, previously banned from contesting elections, won the second-largest bloc as independent candidates. Bangladesh faces significant challenges including climate vulnerability, densely populated coastal zones, garment industry dependence, and governance reforms. The Election Commission of Bangladesh (ecs.gov.bd) administers polling.

I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
