About elections in Bahamas

The Bahamas is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth. The 39-seat House of Assembly is elected by first-past-the-post from single-member constituencies; an appointed Senate of 16 members completes the bicameral Parliament. The prime minister leads the executive as head of government, while the Governor-General represents the British Crown as head of state. Politics has long alternated between two parties: the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), which led independence in 1973, and the Free National Movement (FNM), a centre-right party founded in 1971. Philip Davis's PLP won a landslide in September 2021, winning 32 of 39 seats and ending the FNM's single term. The Bahamian economy depends heavily on tourism and financial services; recurring challenges include crime, inequality between New Providence (Nassau) and the Family Islands, and climate vulnerability — particularly after Hurricane Dorian devastated parts of the country in 2019. Elections are managed by the Parliamentary Registration Department and must be held within five years of the last dissolution of Parliament. Turnout typically runs 50-65%. The Bahamas has maintained a consistent record of peaceful democratic transfers of power throughout its post-independence history.
