Labor has governed Victoria since 2014 and holds a majority in the 88-seat Legislative Assembly, where 45 seats are needed; it won 56 in 2022. Ben Carroll has been premier since 28 July 2026, succeeding Jacinta Allan. The LiberalβNational Coalition is in opposition under Jess Wilson.
Possible coalitions
Premier Ben Carroll has ruled out any arrangement with the Greens and has challenged the Coalition to rule out One Nation. Jess Wilson says she is running for a majority and is interested only in the existing LiberalβNational agreement; she has declined to say whether she would accept One Nation's votes for confidence and supply.

How the vote works
Voting is compulsory for enrolled electors. The 88 members of the Legislative Assembly, the chamber that decides who governs, are elected in single-member districts by full preferential voting: every box must be numbered, and preferences are distributed until one candidate has a majority. The 40 members of the Legislative Council are elected in eight five-member regions by the single transferable vote, now with optional preferences above and below the line, group voting tickets having been abolished. The primary count gives a picture on the night; preference distributions and close seats can take a week or more.
