About elections in Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth. The bicameral Parliament consists of the 17-seat elected House of Representatives and a 17-seat appointed Senate. Elections are held under the Westminster first-past-the-post system, with the prime minister drawn from the party commanding a parliamentary majority. The Antigua Labour Party (ALP) of Prime Minister Gaston Browne has dominated politics since 2014, winning successive general elections in 2018 and 2023 with decisive majorities. The United Progressive Party (UPP) forms the main opposition, representing a centre-left coalition that governed from 2004 to 2014. Voter turnout in recent elections has ranged from 55% to 70%, with the small population of approximately 98,000 voting across 17 single-member constituencies. There is no upper house election; Senators are appointed by the Governor-General on the prime minister's and opposition leader's advice. Antigua and Barbuda has held regular competitive elections since independence in 1981 and is considered a stable Caribbean democracy, though critics note the ALP's long hold on power and the country's economic dependence on tourism and its citizenship-by-investment programme. Official election results are administered by the Electoral Commission of Antigua and Barbuda.
