About elections in Algeria
I'm Bartłomiej Paruzel, and I built ElectioMap to map national elections around the world. Algeria is a presidential republic in North Africa and the largest country on the continent by area. The president is directly elected for a five-year term and holds extensive executive power, while the bicameral Parliament consists of the People's National Assembly (the lower house, elected by proportional representation) and the Council of the Nation (the upper house, two-thirds elected by local councils and one-third appointed by the president). Politics has long been dominated by the National Liberation Front (FLN), the party of the 1954-62 war of independence, alongside the National Rally for Democracy (RND) and a range of Islamist and secular parties, with the military establishment a decisive force in the background. The Hirak protest movement of 2019 forced the resignation of long-serving President Abdelaziz Bouteflika; Abdelmadjid Tebboune was elected later that year and re-elected in 2024. Algeria is a major oil and natural-gas exporter and a key gas supplier to Europe, and hydrocarbons dominate government revenue, making economic diversification, youth unemployment and political openness central challenges. Elections are administered by the Independent National Electoral Authority (ANIE); international observers and opposition figures have frequently questioned turnout figures and the competitiveness of contests.

Every figure on ElectioMap is taken from the official electoral authority for Algeria — the national election commission or equivalent body that certifies the count. I enter vote and turnout percentages exactly as published, to two decimal places and without rounding, and show seat totals wherever a chamber is being filled.
